Phakhara is a traditional mark engraved on a woman’s body to signify her passage into adulthood and to protect against field and forest spirits (Kameo). Historically, soot from the hearth and thorns—especially from the yuzu tree—were used to carefully pierce and carve the design; the yuzu thorn was preferred because it caused less pain and lowered the risk of infection. This collection revisits a fading art form: we believe phakhara is now nearly extinct, and our aim is to honor and preserve it for future generations while showing young people the richness of our cultural heritage.
